    A tri-dimensional approach for auditing brand loyalty

    Over the past twenty years brand loyalty has been an important topic for both marketing practitioners and academics. While practitioners have produced proprietary brand loyalty audit models, there has been little academic research to make transparent the methodology that underpins these audits and to enable practitioners to understand, develop and conduct their own audits. In this paper, we propose a framework for a brand loyalty audit that uses a tri-dimensional approach to brand loyalty, which includes behavioural loyalty and the two components of attitudinal loyalty: emotional and cognitive loyalty. In allowing for different levels and intensity of brand loyalty, this tri-dimensional approach is important from a managerial perspective. It means that loyalty strategies that arise from a brand audit can be made more effective by targeting the market segments that demonstrate the most appropriate combination of brand loyalty components. We propose a matrix with three dimensions (emotional, cognitive and behavioural loyalty) and two levels (high and low loyalty) to facilitate a brand loyalty audit.     The complete genome sequence of the phytopathogenic fungus Sclerotinia sclerotiorum reveals insights into the genome architecture of broad host range pathogens

    Sclerotinia sclerotiorum is a phytopathogenic fungus with over 400 hosts including numerous economically important cultivated species. This contrasts many economically destructive pathogens that only exhibit a single or very few hosts. Many plant pathogens exhibit a “two-speed” genome. So described because their genomes contain alternating gene rich, repeat sparse and gene poor, repeat-rich regions. In fungi, the repeat-rich regions may be subjected to a process termed repeat-induced point mutation (RIP). Both repeat activity and RIP are thought to play a significant role in evolution of secreted virulence proteins, termed effectors. We present a complete genome sequence of S. sclerotiorum generated using Single Molecule Real-Time Sequencing technology with highly accurate annotations produced using an extensive RNA sequencing data set. We identified 70 effector candidates and have highlighted their in planta expression profiles. Furthermore, we characterized the genome architecture of S. sclerotiorum in comparison to plant pathogens that exhibit “two-speed” genomes. We show that there is a significant association between positions of secreted proteins and regions with a high RIP index in S. sclerotiorum but we did not detect a correlation between secreted protein proportion and GC content. Neither did we detect a negative correlation between CDS content and secreted protein proportion across the S. sclerotiorum genome. We conclude that S. sclerotiorum exhibits subtle signatures of enhanced mutation of secreted proteins in specific genomic compartments as a result of transposition and RIP activity. However, these signatures are not observable at the whole-genome scale

    Insights into the influence of solvent polarity on the crystallization of poly(ethylene oxide) spin-coated thin films via in situ grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering

    Controlling polymer thin-film morphology and crystallinity is crucial for a wide range of applications, particularly in thin-film organic electronic devices. In this work, the crystallization behavior of a model polymer, poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), during spin-coating is studied. PEO films were spun-cast from solvents possessing different polarities (chloroform, THF, and methanol) and probed via in situ grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering. The crystallization behavior was found to follow the solvent polarity order (where chloroform chloroform > methanol). When spun-cast from nonpolar chloroform, crystallization largely followed Avrami kinetics, resulting in the formation of morphologies comprising large spherulites. PEO solutions cast from more polar solvents (THF and methanol) do not form well-defined highly crystalline morphologies and are largely amorphous with the presence of small crystalline regions. The difference in morphological development of PEO spun-cast from polar solvents is attributed to clustering phenomena that inhibit polymer crystallization. This work highlights the importance of considering individual components of polymer solubility, rather than simple total solubility, when designing processing routes for the generation of morphologies with optimum crystallinities or morphologies

    Distribution and Abundance of Fin whales and other baleen whales in the European Atlantic

    The abundance of fin whales (Balaenoptera physalus) and other baleen whales was generated from data collected during shipboard sightings surveys as part of the Cetacean Offshore Distribution and Abundance in the European Atlantic project (CODA). The survey area covered offshore waters beyond the continental shelf of the UK, Ireland, France and Spain. The area was stratified into four blocks and was surveyed by five ships during July 2007. Double platform methods employing the trialconfiguration method (BT-method) were used. Fin, sei (B. borealis) and minke whales (B. acutorostrata) were positively identified, with possible sightings of blue whales (B. musculus). Abundance was estimated for these species and for “large baleen whales” which included fin, sei, fin/sei and blue whales. Abundance for the larger species was estimated using the Mark- Recapture Line Transect design-based method and also model-based methods using density surface modelling. Sample size limitations dictated that conventional line transect sampling methods were used to estimate the abundance of minke whales. Estimates from the two methods were comparable but model-based methods improved the precision and were considered best estimates. The density of large baleen whale species was greatest in the southern end of the survey area and water depth, temperature and distance to the 2000m contour were important predictors of their distribution. The total abundance estimated for the entire survey area was 9,019 (CV=0.11) fin whales and 9,619 (CV= 0.11) large baleen whales. The uncertainty around these estimates due to duplicate classification and species identification were explored. The fin whale estimate is likely to be underestimated because it excludes unidentified large whales, of which a large proportion was likely to have been fin whales. Notwithstanding this, these large baleen whale abundance estimates are the first robust estimates (corrected for responsive movement and g(0)) for this area. The estimated abundance of minke whales was 6,765 (CV=0.99) and sightings were restricted to the northern blocks of the survey area. The minke whale estimate, although imprecise and likely underestimated, does provide a baseline figure for this area and, when considered with results from the SCANS-II continental shelf surveys of July 2005, gives a more comprehensive picture of this species in the European Atlantic. These abundance estimates are important contributions to the conservation and management of these species in the Northeast Atlantic

    NITRATE-CIN Study: Protocol of a Randomized (1:1) Single-Center, UK, Double-Blind Placebo-Controlled Trial Testing the Effect of Inorganic Nitrate on Contrast-Induced Nephropathy in Patients Undergoing Coronary Angiography for Acute Coronary Syndromes

    Background: Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN), an acute kidney injury resulting from the administration of intravascular iodinated contrast media, is a significant cause of morbidity/mortality following coronary angiographic procedures in high-risk patients. Despite preventative measures intended to mitigate the risk of CIN, there remains a need for novel effective treatments. Evidence suggests that delivery of nitric oxide (NO) through chemical reduction of inorganic nitrate to NO may offer a novel therapeutic strategy to reduce CIN and thus preserve long term renal function. Design: The NITRATE-CIN trial is a single-center, randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial, which plans to recruit 640 patients presenting with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) who are at risk of CIN. Patients will be randomized to either inorganic nitrate therapy (capsules containing 12 mmol KNO3) or placebo capsules containing potassium chloride (KCl) daily for 5 days. The primary endpoint is development of CIN using the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria. A key secondary endpoint is renal function over a 3-month follow-up period. Additional secondary endpoints include serum renal biomarkers (e.g. neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin) at 6 h, 48 h and 3 months following administration of contrast. Cost-effectiveness of inorganic nitrate therapy will also be evaluated. Summary: This study is designed to investigate the hypothesis that inorganic nitrate treatment decreases the rate of CIN as part of semi-emergent coronary angiography for ACS. Inorganic nitrate is a simple and easy to administer intervention that may prove useful in prevention of CIN in at-risk patients undergoing coronary angiographic procedures

    Binary solvent system used to fabricate fully annealing‐free perovskite solar cells

    High temperature post-deposition annealing of hybrid lead halide perovskite thin films—typically lasting at least 10 min—dramatically limits the maximum roll-to-roll coating speed, which determines solar module manufacturing costs. While several approaches for “annealing-free” perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have been demonstrated, many are of limited feasibility for scalable fabrication. Here, this work has solvent-engineered a high vapor pressure solvent mixture of 2-methoxy ethanol and tetrahydrofuran to deposit highly crystalline perovskite thin-films at room temperature using gas-quenching to remove the volatile solvents. Using this approach, this work demonstrates p-i-n devices with an annealing-free MAPbI3 perovskite layer achieving stabilized power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of up to 18.0%, compared to 18.4% for devices containing an annealed perovskite layer. This work then explores the deposition of self-assembled molecules as the hole-transporting layer without annealing. This work finally combines the methods to create fully annealing-free devices having stabilized PCEs of up to 17.1%. This represents the state-of-the-art for annealing-free fabrication of PSCs with a process fully compatible with roll-to-roll manufacture

    Keeping physically active with rheumatoid arthritis: semi-structured interviews to explore patient perspectives, experiences and strategies

    © 2018 Chartered Society of Physiotherapy Background: Regular physical activity is safe and beneficial for people with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) but the majority of people with RA are less active than the general population and have a higher risk of co-morbidities. Exploring strategies used by physically active people with RA could inform effective methods to support those who are less active. Objective: To explore the perspectives, experiences and strategies employed by people with RA who successfully engage with regular physical activity. Design: Individual semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. Participants: A purposive sample of physically active people with RA. Results: Twelve females and three males participated (mean age 56, range 29 to 80; mean disease duration 13 years, range 10 months to 46 years). Analysis revealed eight constructs clustered into three themes. Theme 1: ‘the individual’ incorporated constructs of symptoms, feelings and role; theme 2: ‘management’ incorporated medical and self-management; theme 3: ‘physical activity’ incorporated constructs of type of physical activity, including barriers or facilitators. Participants reported a long history of physical activity prior to diagnosis and good support networks. All participants recognised that physical activity was key to their RA management, acknowledged the benefits from engaging in physical activity and were able to overcome barriers. Participants had strong beliefs that physical function would decline without regular physical activity. Conclusions: People with RA who successfully maintain physical activity are motivated by a desire to manage symptoms, resist functional decline and maintain health and independence. These findings should be explored with a wider range of people with RA
